My fields of research include child protection, the judiciary and judicial education, miscarriages of justice including wrongful convictions, and self-represented litigants. I practiced child protection for eight years, wrote a text for the judiciary on child protection in Ontario, and acted as a policy analyst for the Motherisk Commission which examined miscarriages of justice in child protection cases resulting from unreliable hair testing for drugs and alcohol at Sick Kids. I worked for the National Judicial Institute for almost ten years, designing educational programs and resources on gender-based violence, the Charter, Evidence, Preventing Wrongful Convictions, self-represented litigants, and other topics. I am currently working with the National Self-Represented Litigants Project.

My interest is in examining how intellectual property rights or legal frameworks for governance and protection of knowledge have diverse impacts on many spheres, including but not limited to agriculture, food security, biotechnology, biodiversity conservation, biosafety, human rights (access to health, education and benefits of technology/scientific advancements, etc). I am also concerned with the nature of interaction or impact that intellectual property rights have in regard to developmental aspirations of marginalized peoples, especially indigenous and local communities across the globe. Most of my work focus on mapping and understanding the interface of intellectual property and development. I also work within the broader international political relations of power between Africa, indeed, the global south and the global north.

My current research focuses on the relations between transnational economic integration ("globalization") and social determinants of health: the conditions under which people live and work. How is the emergence of a global marketplace affecting opportunities to lead a healthy life? Who wins, and who loses? How will the worldwide financial crisis we are now experiencing affect health disparities between rich and poor?
