Performed genetic studies of RNA viruses with a focus on evolution of virulence in influenza virus, reovirus replication and cancer treatment, and hepatitis C immune evasion. The work focused on understands viral replication so that virus infection can both be prevented and alternatively be applied as therapy to treat diseases. He is a founding member of the Canadian Oncolytic Virus Consortium that is developing viruses as novel tumor therapeutics. He is also the founding Executive Director of the University of Ottawa for Emerging Pathogens Research Centre (EPRC). Dr. Brown is an internationally recognized influenza researcher who sits on various committees and institutional groups (CIHR workshop on influenza research priorities 2005; CIHR Pandemic Preparedness Strategic Research Initiative Task group; Organizing and program committee Chair of the 2008 of Canadian Pandemic Preparedness Meeting ; Pandemic Vaccine Working Group of the Public Health Agency of Canada; ) dealing with influenza pandemic preparedness.Area(s) of expertise:

Research information:
My research group is interested in understanding the interplay established between bacteria and their host during infection.
We are currently focusing on the enteropathogen Shigella flexneri, which use a Type Three Secretion Apparatus (T3SA) to inject some of its proteins inside human intestinal cells. Our main interests are:
- T3SA functioning and regulation;
- bacterial strategies for hijacking the biological processes of the host;
- bacterial and host adaptation at play during infection. Our long-term objective is to identify novel therapeutic avenues to treat infectious diseases.
Keywords: gastrointestinal infections caused by bacteria of the Shigella genus and other Escherichia coli.

My research focuses on the ecological and environmental factors affecting ticks, vertebrate hosts, and pathogens (e.g., bacteria, virus, etc) of the tick-borne disease system in Canada. I use a wide variety of methods including meta-analyses, field surveys and experiments, genetic analyses, and remote sensing analyses.

Research information:
I have expertise in Canadian and international health systems, humanitarian crises (wars, natural disasters, refugee crises), and high-consequence infectious disease outbreaks (Ebola, Marburg, COVID, influenza, cholera, measles, etc.). In my current role, I am the lead on Canadian health policy issues for Canada’s respiratory therapy profession, and draw on my background as a respiratory therapist in the acute care and long-term care sectors to speak authoritatively on respiratory illnesses (RSV, influenza, pneumonia, COVID, etc.), Canadian healthcare access, pharmacare, and national health policy. As a researcher, I conduct research into health service access among older adults and marginalised populations, particularly the health needs of older adults during emergencies such as natural disasters and during wars, and the development and use of experimental medical countermeasures (vaccines, therapies, diagnostics) for diseases such as Ebola, Marburg, Lassa, avian influenza, and COVID-19. I spent a decade working with Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), including as the organization's Humanitarian Representative to Canada where I led humanitarian diplomacy during wars and conflicts disease epidemics, refugee crises, and natural disasters. I have on-the-ground experience in Afghanistan, Haiti, Democratic Republic of Congo, Bangladesh, and the Central African Republic. I bring first-hand insights into how humanitarian crises, diplomacy, foreign policy, and health security intersect. Key commentary areas: Emerging and neglected infectious disease threats & medical countermeasures Respiratory health, respiratory illnesses, Canadian health policy, national pharmacare, and access to healthcare challenges (wait times, quality of care, professional practice) Canada’s role in humanitarian diplomacy and crisis response Health system strengthening in fragile and conflict affected states Intersections of foreign policy, disasters/conflict, and global health security Affiliations: Senior Director, Public Policy, Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists; Investigator, Bruyère Health Research Institute, Ottawa; Adjunct Professor of Common Law, University of Ottawa Centre for Health Law, Policy & EthicsArea(s) of expertise:
