My research bears on the different aspects of Canadian identity and on the emergence of a field of research specifically dealing with Canada. I am also interested on ethnicity in Canada, issues on a Quebec and national level, election results in Quebec and Canada, on the Jewish community of Canada and Montréal, and more precisely on anti-Semitism, secularism, linguistic integration and racism in Canadian society. I also specialize on Canadian Yiddish literature and Canadian Yiddish culture.

Tyler Chamberlin conducts research into industrial innovation and its impacts on individual firms and the economy. Christine Dallaire studies sports and physical activity from a sociocultural perspective, with a particular focus on Canadian society, youth and communities as well Canada's francophonie. She is currently comparing the experiences of young adults (18-25 years old) that invest themselves in sports leadership roles as a form of community engagement through the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa, the YMCA-YWCA Capital Region and the Jeux de l’Acadie. Her earlier research focused on the role of sport in community building and in youth francophone and national belonging at the Jeux de l'Acadie, the Jeux franco-ontariens, the Jeux francophones de l'Alberta, the Jeux de la francophonie canadienne and the Jeux du Québec.

I currently research the range of positions that investors take to respond to climate. These include incorporating ESG in their investment policies, engaging with companies, or divesting from fossil fuels entirely. I am currently involved on a large project about the fossil fuel divestment movement, comprised of students, faculty, and other activists worldwide who promote the exit from carbon intensive industries, in large institutional investors like pension funds, universities, and governments. I examine the range of responses to this movement, from doing nothing, to adopting a net-zero approach, all the way to committing to divest from energy companies.

Since 2015, Dr. Leroux has been studying the changing dynamics of white, French-descendant identities in the 21st century, particularly as it pertains to increasing claims to "Indigenous" identities among this group. His book, Distorted Descent: White Claims to Indigenous Identity, was selected as one of the ten most influential books published by the University of Manitoba Press in the past decade. His research continues to push the boundaries in the study of white identities, and as such, he is widely sought after as a public speaker on matters related to contemporary forms of settler colonialism.

I am an immigration and refugee lawyer and expert. I am willing and able to speak about any immigration programs including refugee and protected persons, family sponsorship, economic, temporary status, citizenship status and status granted on humanitarian and compassionate grounds. Trained in demography and sociology, I defended my PhD in 2004. I am interested in social and demographic changes in West Africa. I explore these issues by studying family dynamics and gender relationships, working more particularly on education, migration and family reconfigurations through marriage processes. I also work on the ethical issues related to our research methodologies through the lenses of pedagogic decolonisation in the academic environment. My current projects are on young and adolescent girls' educational dynamics in Senegal, and on immigrants' social participation to the host society in Canada/Québec.

I am particularly interested in mental health. I study the links between social norms and mental issues. I published the following work in 2009 that draws upon this topic: État dépressif et temporalité: Contribution à la sociologie de la santé mentale (Éditions Liber). My research also focuses on the practice of sport. As such, the Montreal Canadians represent, for me, an incredible mirror of contemporary social demands. I co-edited the book Le canadien de Montréal: Une légende repensée, (Presses de l’Université de Montréal) in 2011. It investigates the social impact of this great hockey team. I also study how sport can constitute a tool for psychosocial development, as a part of innovative intervention practices for troubled youth.

My interest is in examining how intellectual property rights or legal frameworks for governance and protection of knowledge have diverse impacts on many spheres, including but not limited to agriculture, food security, biotechnology, biodiversity conservation, biosafety, human rights (access to health, education and benefits of technology/scientific advancements, etc). I am also concerned with the nature of interaction or impact that intellectual property rights have in regard to developmental aspirations of marginalized peoples, especially indigenous and local communities across the globe. Most of my work focus on mapping and understanding the interface of intellectual property and development. I also work within the broader international political relations of power between Africa, indeed, the global south and the global north.

My research focuses on penal policies and use of mixed legal regimes in the governance of deviance and security. Domestically, I work on the uses of criminal law, immigration law and regulatory regimes in the control of protesters, immigration and street gangs. Internationally, I focus on criminal justice in adversarial and inquisitorial systems (more specifically in Brazil, France and Canada). I collaborate with Brazilian colleagues in the areas of politics, criminal justice, policing and security policies.

Research information:

My research examines issues of transnationalism, migration, identity, and citizenship in Canadian cities with a focus on immigrant settlement, community organizing, migrant and minority groups, and questions of belonging in and through space. My recent projects investigate the everyday experiences of minority groups in the transborder city of Ottawa-Gatineau, the production and consumption of multicultural media, and the role of environmental factors in international migration to Canada.

Representation in the popular music industry and popularity charts, with particular focus to Country Music. My research uses industry data emerging from radio airplay, popularity charts, and streaming to track the impact of programming practices on the careers of women, artists of colour, and LGBTQIA+ artists.
