Research information:
Our research addresses the role of the serotonin and dopamine systems in Depression, Anxiety, and Schizophrenia. In particular, our research focuses on genetic and environmental factors (such as early or late life stress) that determine the activity of these systems and the implications for brain function and behavior. We have identified specific gene polymorphisms, gene regulators and epigenetic alterations caused by stress that increase the risk of mental illness and affect the response to antidepressant treatments. Our current research is to develop animal models of these genetic alterations to identify their role in susceptibility to mental illness and as models to develop new treatments to attenuate the effects of stress, anxiety, or depression.

Performed genetic studies of RNA viruses with a focus on evolution of virulence in influenza virus, reovirus replication and cancer treatment, and hepatitis C immune evasion. The work focused on understands viral replication so that virus infection can both be prevented and alternatively be applied as therapy to treat diseases. He is a founding member of the Canadian Oncolytic Virus Consortium that is developing viruses as novel tumor therapeutics. He is also the founding Executive Director of the University of Ottawa for Emerging Pathogens Research Centre (EPRC). Promoting recovery of function following stroke by enhancing brain neuroplasticity (e.g. growth of new connections, new neurons, etc.). I study how exercise, stem cells, rehabilitation can be used to improve brain reorganization and repair after stroke or in age related forms of dementia (ex. vascular cognitive impairment). Other work focuses include how unhealthy diets damage blood vessels in the brain and impair learning and memory ability.

1) Intracerebral Hemorrhage (ICH). ICH is the most devastating form of stroke, resulting in the highest mortality and disability rates. My group is working towards a definitive treatment for ICH. 2) Neuroimaging & acute stroke. I believe advanced brain imaging can optimize acute stroke therapy, guide therapeutic decision-making, and expand our current treatment windows. 3) Stroke Recovery. We have launched a series of studies evaluating the use of mobile-platform technologies to enhance recovery from stroke while in the acute care hospital.Area(s) of expertise:

Research information:
Dr. Hakim’s research interests include cerebral vulnerability and protection in stroke and other conditions, and investigating the means of enhancing post-stroke plasticity. Forty years of research into the brain and its functions has given Dr. Hakim much insight into the illness known as dementia. Along with increasing awareness of dementia among the general public is a growing interest in its prevention. Dr. Hakim’s work with stroke patients has led him to explore dementia, a major consequence of stroke, and write about means of reducing it.

Research information:
I study how nonlinear systems can generate unpredictable behaviour including chaos. I also study how this behaviour is influenced by various sources of noise such as environmental fluctuations. This research is applied to the neurosciences, where I seek to understand how our senses code information about the outside physical world, and to unravel the secrets of the codes used by the brain. It is also applied to physiological variability such as that of heart rate and breathing rate in health and disease, using also nonlinear time series methods. My mathematical models make predictions about experimental outcomes in my colleagues' neurobiological and clinical laboratories. I am interested finally in plasticity and memory formation, neurotransmitter balance in mental health, the role of feedback between brain areas, and the behaviours of neurons under trauma.
