Research information:
Our research addresses the role of the serotonin and dopamine systems in Depression, Anxiety, and Schizophrenia. In particular, our research focuses on genetic and environmental factors (such as early or late life stress) that determine the activity of these systems and the implications for brain function and behavior. We have identified specific gene polymorphisms, gene regulators and epigenetic alterations caused by stress that increase the risk of mental illness and affect the response to antidepressant treatments. Our current research is to develop animal models of these genetic alterations to identify their role in susceptibility to mental illness and as models to develop new treatments to attenuate the effects of stress, anxiety, or depression.

Dr. Ivy Lynn Bourgeault, PhD, FCAHS, is a Professor in the School of Sociological and Anthropological Studies in the Faculty of Social Sciences. She holds the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Chair in Gender, Work and Health Human Resources. She is the lead coordinator of the pan Canadian Health Human Resources Network and the Scientific Director of the Ontario Health Human Resource Research Network both housed at the University of Ottawa. Dr. Bourgeault has garnered an international reputation for her research on health professions, health policy and women’s health.

Dr. Ivanova is a Clinical Psychologist and a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Centre for Eating Disorders Research at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. She obtained her Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Counselling Psychology from the University of Toronto. Her research interests focus on the affective and interpersonal characteristics of eating disorders, as well as the role of emotion and attachment in the context of psychotherapy process and outcome research. In addition to conducting research, she works as part of a multidisciplinary team providing psychological services at the Regional Centre for the Treatment of Eating Disorders, the Ottawa Hospital. I am particularly interested in mental health. I study the links between social norms and mental issues. I published the following work in 2009 that draws upon this topic: État dépressif et temporalité: Contribution à la sociologie de la santé mentale (Éditions Liber). My research also focuses on the practice of sport. As such, the Montreal Canadians represent, for me, an incredible mirror of contemporary social demands. I co-edited the book Le canadien de Montréal: Une légende repensée, (Presses de l’Université de Montréal) in 2011. It investigates the social impact of this great hockey team. I also study how sport can constitute a tool for psychosocial development, as a part of innovative intervention practices for troubled youth.
