Mark Erik Hecht is a lawyer, academic and human rights advocate as well as the co-founder of Beyond Borders ECPAT Canada. He is currently legal advisor to the Children’s Aid Society of Ottawa and the senior legal counsel to Beyond Borders ECPAT Canada. Prior to his recent appointments, he was a visiting professor at the University of Ottawa and an assistant professor and the access to justice chair at the University of Windsor. Mr. Hecht’s primary research interest is international child law, specifically the role and involvement of the private sector in the commercial sexual exploitation of children.

I specialize in international human rights law, with a particular interest in feminist and decolonial theories of law. My doctoral research focuses specifically on truth and reconciliation commissions and the perceptions of victims, including survivors of sexual violence. My broader research interests concern women's experience of armed conflict and their involvement in the transitional justice process. My research focuses on penal policies and use of mixed legal regimes in the governance of deviance and security. Domestically, I work on the uses of criminal law, immigration law and regulatory regimes in the control of protesters, immigration and street gangs. Internationally, I focus on criminal justice in adversarial and inquisitorial systems (more specifically in Brazil, France and Canada).
