Research information:

Dr. Rukhsana Ahmed’s research embraces the cross/trans/inter-disciplinary nature of communication scholarship, with specific focus on exploring the role of communication processes in improving health outcomes among marginalized communities and promoting broader social changes in international health contexts. She is particularly interested in the ways in which systems of beliefs, values, actions, and symbols are shared, or not, by people and how social groups influence communication in health care interactions. She is also interested in the ways in which people’s cultural selves become entwined with race, ethnicity, gender, and social class groups and shape their perceptions of health, illness, and health care. Although her research is deeply rooted in health communication, Dr. Ahmed is also actively involved in interdisciplinary and multisectoral projects and partnerships in other realms of communication, including immigrant integration, multicultural media, and religious diversity.

Research information:

My research is in international relations and international political economy. I study international finance with a particular interest in economic crises, the politics of inflation and central banking, and the power of economic ideas. I often try to understand present debates and issues through historical analysis—and am currently studying the early days of neoliberalism in the Reagan and Thatcher governments, which in many ways is the crucible for the present moment.

 

I am also drawn to trying to make sense of things that are not quite what they seem in politics today—for example looking at the central role of ignorance and failure in policymaking today.

 

My current research is motivated by a desire to understand the difficulties of our present moment by tracing the links between democracy, politics and the economy.

Marie-Eve Desrosiers is associate professor in the School of International Development and Global Studies. Her research focuses on the security of developing countries. She studies political crises and civil conflicts, the role of identity in contentious politics, state-society relations, as well as state fragility. Her most recent studies have examined episodes of political violence in Rwanda during the twentieth century. She also conducts research on Canadian foreign and international development policy. She was a founder of the francophone branch of the Canadian Consortium on Human Security and she regularly takes part in civil society activities pertaining to human security.

Research information:

Dr. Angel M. Foster holds a DPhil (doctorate) in Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Oxford, an MD from Harvard Medical School, and an AM (master's degree) from Stanford University. She has conducted multi-methods research on women’s health in Burma, Canada, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Palestine, Thailand, Tunisia, and the United States. Her current research focuses on expanding access to emergency contraception, increasing access to safe, high quality, and affordable abortion services, improving the reproductive health training of health service professionals, and Identifying and addressing the reproductive health needs of vulnerable populations including young/unmarried women and refugees/displaced women. She has published more than 50 articles, book chapters, and technical reports on women's health and her first book, Emergency contraception: The story of a global reproductive health technology, was published by Palgrave MacMillan in 2012 (co-edited with L.L. Wynn). Her next book, Abortion pills, test tube babies & sex toys: Emerging sexual and reproductive health technologies in the Middle East and North Africa, will soon be published by Vanderbilt University Press.

My interest is in examining how intellectual property rights or legal frameworks for governance and protection of knowledge have diverse impacts on many spheres, including but not limited to agriculture, food security, biotechnology, biodiversity conservation, biosafety, human rights (access to health, education and benefits of technology/scientific advancements, etc). I am also concerned with the nature of interaction or impact that intellectual property rights have in regard to developmental aspirations of marginalized peoples, especially indigenous and local communities across the globe. Most of my work focus on mapping and understanding the interface of intellectual property and development. I also work within the broader international political relations of power between Africa, indeed, the global south and the global north.

Victoria Schorr is a sub-Saharan Africa specialist with more than 10 years of experience analysing African politics, economics, and business. She holds an MSc in African Politics from the School of Oriental and African Studies, and a BA in African Studies from McGill University. Her areas of specialisation include African political economy, the African private sector, international business and investment, international relations, behavioural economics, and development. She has written and published a variety of articles, both academic and non-academic, and has an active blog. Prior to joining uOttawa's Open African Innovation Research network (Open AIR) in July 2015, Schorr worked as a consultant with organisations ranging from grassroots NGOs to the UN, as well as several Canadian government departments including the Department of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Development. She is a Board Member of the Canadian International Council’s Africa Study Group and is a special advisor to Edu-Vision 2020’s Africa programming.
