Research information:

My research is in international relations and international political economy. I study international finance with a particular interest in economic crises, the politics of inflation and central banking, and the power of economic ideas. I often try to understand present debates and issues through historical analysis—and am currently studying the early days of neoliberalism in the Reagan and Thatcher governments, which in many ways is the crucible for the present moment.

 

I am also drawn to trying to make sense of things that are not quite what they seem in politics today—for example looking at the central role of ignorance and failure in policymaking today.

 

My current research is motivated by a desire to understand the difficulties of our present moment by tracing the links between democracy, politics and the economy.

I have expertise in Canadian and international health systems, humanitarian crises (wars, natural disasters, refugee crises), and high-consequence infectious disease outbreaks (Ebola, Marburg, COVID, influenza, cholera, measles, etc.). In my current role, I am the lead on Canadian health policy issues for Canada’s respiratory therapy profession, and draw on my background as a respiratory therapist in the acute care and long-term care sectors to speak authoritatively on respiratory illnesses (RSV, influenza, pneumonia, COVID, etc.), Canadian healthcare access, pharmacare, and national health policy. As a researcher, I conduct research into health service access among older adults and marginalised populations, particularly the health needs of older adults during emergencies such as natural disasters and during wars, and the development and use of experimental medical countermeasures (vaccines, therapies, diagnostics) for diseases such as Ebola, Marburg, Lassa, avian influenza, and COVID-19. I spent a decade working with Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), including as the organization's Humanitarian Representative to Canada where I led humanitarian diplomacy during wars and conflicts disease epidemics, refugee crises, and natural disasters. I have on-the-ground experience in Afghanistan, Haiti, Democratic Republic of Congo, Bangladesh, and the Central African Republic. I bring first-hand insights into how humanitarian crises, diplomacy, foreign policy, and health security intersect. Mr. Tassé is a Chartered Professional Accountant - Chartered Accountant (CPA,CA) (Canada), a Forensic Certified Public Accountant (FCPA) (USA),anda Certified Internal Controls Auditor (CICA) (USA). He carries the designation Certified in Financial Forensics (CFF) (USA)and holds both a Master's degree in Business Administration (MBA) and an Honours Bachelor of Commerce from the Telfer School on Management at the University of Ottawa.

He has pursued ongoing professional development as an Associate or Affiliate member with the Harvard Institute for Learning in Retirement, the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, the Association of Certified Forensic Investigators of Canada, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the American Anti-Corruption Institute (holder of the CACM designation).

Mr. Tassé is a member or panel member of various groups including the Accountant-Lawyer Alliance, the Anti-Money Laundering Association, the Canadian Centre of Excellence for Anti-Corruption, the Rutgers Institute on Anti-Corruption Studies, the Canadian Centre for Ethics and Corporate Policy, the Institute for Mergers, Acquisitions and Alliances, and the Business Development Bank of Canada ViewPoints. He is also a speaker for the Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario, and volunteers with the United Nations Online Volunteering Service.

Mr. Tassé is a past and current member of various advisory boards, risk management committees, audit committees, governance committees, and boards of trustees with fiduciary responsibilities. As a philanthropist, he supports non-governmental organizations that fight corruption, such as Transparency International and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists.

For over 20 years, Mr. Tassé has been teaching (100+ courses at the bachelor, MHA, MBA and     International MBA level)at one of Canada’s top business schools, the Telfer School of Management. He is also an instructor with the Canadian Centre of Excellence for Anti-Corruption, a recipient of a Teaching Excellence Award in the MBA program, and has taught at two other Canadian universities.
