Research information:
My research is in international relations and international political economy. I study international finance with a particular interest in economic crises, the politics of inflation and central banking, and the power of economic ideas. I often try to understand present debates and issues through historical analysis—and am currently studying the early days of neoliberalism in the Reagan and Thatcher governments, which in many ways is the crucible for the present moment.
I am also drawn to trying to make sense of things that are not quite what they seem in politics today—for example looking at the central role of ignorance and failure in policymaking today.
My current research is motivated by a desire to understand the difficulties of our present moment by tracing the links between democracy, politics and the economy.

My diplomatic career has exposed me to the Muslim World (Iran, Pakistan, Indonesia) and to the Arab world (Egypt), as well as to Russia and to Security issues (NATO). Of course, with 38 years of experience in Foreign Affairs, I do have a solid background onn Canadian Foreign Policy. I have been involved in policy planning (both political and trade) for over 6 years during my career at DFAIT. I have contributed a number of TV and Radio interviews on issues related to all facets of my experience and have written a number of pieces and comments at conferences all over Canada and abroad. As the Executive Vice President of the Conference of Defence Associations Institute, and the co-author of "Canada's Strategic Outlook" of the CDAI for 2013 and 2014, I am also involved in Canada's defence policy. I write as well for CDFAI and for CIPS.

Dr. Jason Nickerson, RRT, FCSRT, PhD is the Senior Director of Public Policy for the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists (CSRT), an Investigator at the Bruyère Health Research Institute in Ottawa and an Adjunct Professor of Common Law at the University of Ottawa’s Centre for Health Law, Policy and Ethics. Dr. Nickerson holds a PhD in Population Health and has worked extensively in global public health and health systems strengthening in Canada and internationally, including spending more than a decade with the medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) where he served as the Humanitarian Representative to Canada. He has worked in humanitarian health responses during armed conflicts, disease epidemics, and sudden onset disasters including in Afghanistan, Haiti, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Central African Republic. His research focuses on the care of acutely ill older adults (particularly in long-term care settings), access to healthcare for marginalized populations, and the development of medical countermeasures for emerging infectious diseases. He has a particular interest in emerging and high-consequence infectious diseases and neglected tropical diseases, including Ebola, Marburg, Lassa Fever, pandemic and avian influenza, and COVID-19. His work focuses on the epidemiology and public health impacts of high-consequence infectious diseases, and also on the development and use of medical countermeasures such as vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostic tests, including the relevance of Canadian innovation funding and pharmaceutical policy on the development of new medical technologies. As a respiratory therapist, he is able to provide commentary and expert opinion on respiratory illnesses, access to healthcare in Canada, and health policy issues. Drawing on his decade of experience as a senior humanitarian official, Dr. Nickerson is able to provide commentary and expert opinion on armed conflicts and wars, Canadian and international foreign policy, and natural disasters.Area(s) of expertise:

Research information:
My interest is in examining how intellectual property rights or legal frameworks for governance and protection of knowledge have diverse impacts on many spheres, including but not limited to agriculture, food security, biotechnology, biodiversity conservation, biosafety, human rights (access to health, education and benefits of technology/scientific advancements, etc). I am also concerned with the nature of interaction or impact that intellectual property rights have in regard to developmental aspirations of marginalized peoples, especially indigenous and local communities across the globe. Most of my work focus on mapping and understanding the interface of intellectual property and development. I also work within the broader international political relations of power between Africa, indeed, the global south and the global north.
