Research information:
Our research addresses the role of the serotonin and dopamine systems in Depression, Anxiety, and Schizophrenia. In particular, our research focuses on genetic and environmental factors (such as early or late life stress) that determine the activity of these systems and the implications for brain function and behavior. We have identified specific gene polymorphisms, gene regulators and epigenetic alterations caused by stress that increase the risk of mental illness and affect the response to antidepressant treatments. Our current research is to develop animal models of these genetic alterations to identify their role in susceptibility to mental illness and as models to develop new treatments to attenuate the effects of stress, anxiety, or depression.

Research information:
For several years I have been conducting research in the field of psychosocial oncology, that is the study of how cancer affects patients and their loved ones. With a growing number of cancer survivors, attention has focused on quality of life post treatment issues. I study commonly encountered difficulties among cancer survivors such as fear of cancer recurrence, stigma, impaired sexuality, and family adjustment. Our ultimate goal is to develop evidence-based intervention for cancer survivors who experience these difficulties.

In general terms, my research focuses on understanding and promoting children's well-being. In particular, my research examines children's behavioural and emotional development as well as the contexts that can influence development as well as the contexts that can influence development, from the pre-natal environment to neighbourhoods. My research also examines experiences that can have a negative influence on children's optimal development in particulare child maltreatment. Here, I am interested not only in understanding risk and protective factors, but also in using this knowledge to ensure that the most effective interventions are offered to children and families in which maltreatment has occurred.
