Research information:

My research expertise is in the related fields of photonics, nonlinear optics, quantum optics, and nanophotonics.  In brief summary, photonics is the study of the use of light for applications of importance to society, nonlinear optics stresses how one beam of light can modify the properties of another beam, quantum optics stresses those aspects of light that require a quantum mechanical description, and nanophotonics stresses the interaction of light with structures of sub-wavelength dimensions.

Research information:

Our research group uses ultrafast optical techniques to improve the general understanding of microscopic interactions and quantum transitions in materials. We rely on lasers and custom-made optical tools to study the physical origin of some of the most intriguing phenomena such as superconductivity. We study and explore ultrafast dynamics inside 2D materials, semiconductors, organic compounds and biological samples.

Research information:

The interaction of light with matter on very small length scales is of interest at the forefront of science and for myriad applications from telecommunications to biotechnology. Underlying this is a need to understand the details of how light interacts with materials. Dr. Ramunno applies theoretical methods and large-scale computation to address several key questions: how laser machining of materials can be controlled to create nanoscale devices; how nanoscale particles interact with new groundbreaking intense UV and X-ray sources; and determining the limits of nanoscale imaging of cells and tissues using nonlinear optics, and how can these be overcome.
