Research information:

My research area is the history of medicine, which includes histories of human health and disease, healing and nursing, medical training and scientific discoveries, from Antiquity to the present day. I have a written a book about the beginnings of (North) American psychiatry at Johns Hopkins Hospital in the pre-war era (Pathologist of the Mind, Johns Hopkins University Press, 2014), and I am currently writing a book about the importation of the "clinical model" of medicine (today, called "biomedicine") from European to North American teaching hospitals at the end of the 19th century.
