Research information:
I have specialized in race relations/diversity and multiculturalism issues with experience in the federal government, the City of Ottawa (as Administrator focussing on ethnic diversity policy and program development) , and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), where for a decade I managed the national Race Relations Program. In this latter capacity, I interacted with municipal governments across Canada; I also coordinated a National Action Committee on Race Relations chaired at different intervals by elected officials such as the mayors of Toronto and Regina. I also served on the FCM team that organized the Board of Directors' quarterly meetings and Annual Conferences held across Canada. Under the FCM's auspices, my activities included ongoing interaction with Boards of Trade, Chambers of Commerce, Human Rights Commissions, the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, ethnocultural and Native communities of different parts of Canada. I also prepared and presented briefs to Parliamentary Standing Committees on Immigration, etc.
Over the years I was involved in international development issues with focus on the Caribbean (taught school for nine years in the region and was involved in trade unions, and social and community activism).
As an author (poet, short story writer, novelist, anthologist and book critic) with numerous book publications, I was appointed the official Poet Laureate of Ottawa (1984-87). My work has appeared in over 60 literary periodicals, and I have published three key anthologies, namely: A Shapely Fire: Changing the Literary Landscape (Mosaic Press, Oakville, Ontario); Another Way to Dance: Contemporary Asian Poetry in Canada and the USA (TSAR Publications, Toronto); and Beyond Sangre Grande: Caribbean Writing Today (TSAR). My last novel, Drums of My Flesh (TSAR), won the top Fiction Prize in Guyana and was nominated for 2007 IMPAC/Dublin Literary Prize. I have done over 300 readings internationally. I also juried for Canada's Governor General's Award (poetry), America's Neustadt International Prize for Literature (via the University of Oklahoma), and the BOCAS/Caribbean Literary Prize.
Published op-ed and feature articles in the Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, the Ottawa Citizen, the Washington Times magazines, etc. Was regular book critic for The Ottawa Journal in the mid-seventies. I’ve done over a hundred book reviews published in a variety of newspapers and journals, including being a regular book reviewer for World Literature Today (University of Oklahoma).

I specialize in teaching Spanish as a foreign language. My experience as a part-time professor at the University has allowed me to be in contact with people of different ages and backgrounds. More than five years of experience teaching Spanish have shaped me as a teacher who can adapt different teaching methods to the specific needs of each student.
My education includes a master's degree in Spanish from the University of Ottawa and a Ph.D. in Spanish that I will get in spring 2013.
As private Spanish tutor, I had among my students, federal government employees, school students and retired adults who want to learn or improve their Spanish.
In my classes, I try to include as part of learning, the masterpieces of Hispanic American authors, Hispanic songs, newspaper articles and other materials that can improve the process of learning a new language.

I specialize in the cultural and literary history of the English-speaking world from 1890 through the 1960s, with a particular focus on the British literature and history of the First World War. My current project offers a reappraisal of the work of certain literary propagandists in light of recent shifts in the war's historiography. I have recently appeared as a guest on BBC Radio 4's documentary program '1914-1918:The Cultural Front', and I am a regular contributor to the University of Oxford's First World War centenary project, 'Continuations and Beginnings'.Area(s) of expertise:

1) The history of science and technology is a broad one, but also specialized. My own expertise tends to the history of science and technology in Canada, the history of astronomy and physics, the history of river transportation, and the history of futuristic technologies. 2) Science-fiction as a literary genre has a long history, and I can discuss it knowledgeably with respect to its general evolution since Antiquity, its history in French, its history in English, and, of course, its writing.
