Doctors admitted to executive training programs

Two doctors who are professors in the Faculty of Medicine have been admitted to prestigious executive training programs.

Dr. Margaret Lawson, of the Department of Paediatrics, joins an elite group of faculty members who have been admitted to the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine Program (ELAM). Dr. Pierre Allard, head of the Palliative Medicine Division, has been selected for the Executive Training for Research Application (EXTRA) Program.

The Hedwig van Ameringen ELAM Program for Women is the only in-depth program that focuses on preparing women faculty at medical and dental schools in the U.S. and Canada for senior leadership positions at academic health centres.

Dr. Lawson is the sixth member of the Faculty of Medicine and the third member of the Department of Pediatrics to be selected to this highly competitive program. She joins Drs. Rosie Goldstein, Noni MacDonald, Sharon Whiting, Brigitte Bonin and Meridith Marks as the newest member of the ELAM Fellows from the University of Ottawa.

Dr. Lawson is also a graduate of uOttawa’s Academic Health Sciences Leadership Program.

Meanwhile, Dr. Pierre Allard, who heads the Palliative Care Division of the SCO Health Service and the palliative care research unit at the Elisabeth Bruyère Research Institute, is one of 24 participants from across Canada chosen for the EXTRA Program.

Dr. Allard plans to use the EXTRA funds to develop a program to ensure that all physicians trained at the University of Ottawa learn basic palliative care skills. “My hope is that this program can be used as a model for other Canadian universities,” he said.

“With his lead roles in three organizations, Dr. Allard is ideally positioned to improve physician training in the palliative care field,” said Jean Bartkowiak, CEO of the SCO Health Service.

The EXTRA Program is supported by the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation, the Canadian College of Health Service Executives, the Canadian Nurses Association , the Canadian Medical Association and the Agence d’évaluation des technologies et des modes d’intervention en santé.
