University creates working group on French-language programs and services

The University of Ottawa’s Senate has approved the creation of a working group on French-language programs and services at its meeting of May 1, 2006.

The group is mandated to provide the university with a vision for the future of French-language programs and services at North America’s largest bilingual university. To develop that vision, the group will:

  • Assess the current situation at the university;
  • Create a practical strategy to allow the university to continue to realize its mission;
  • Develop a detailed list of projects that are achievable in the next five years;
  • Assess the sources of funding available to help the university achieve its goals and;
  • Recommend an appropriate long-term evaluation framework.

Members of the group will be drawn from the administration, the Board of Governors, faculty members, support staff, undergraduate and graduate students, alumni, retired staff, and the Franco-Ontarian community. The senior administrative representative on the committee will be Sylvie Lauzon, Associate Vice-President (Academic).

A tentative timeline for the group identifies the following milestones:
  • September 2006: the group will post a consultation document on the Web, inviting public input.
  • January 2007: the group will submit a draft report to the university, including recommendations.
  • Spring 2007: A final plan covering the period to 2012 will be submitted to the Senate and the Board of Governors of the University.
