Research information:

Faces play an essential role during social interactions because they convey a wealth of socially relevant information such as identity, gender, ethnicity, emotional state, personality traits, and social status. These non-verbal social cues can have a profound impact on social interactions by influencing how we feel, think, and behave towards others. My research program aims at understanding how humans analyze social cues conveyed by faces, and how the nature of this process changes across the lifespan. In my laboratory, participants of different age groups are asked to perform tasks that require the analysis of different social cues and their performance and physiological responses are recorded and compared. This research has important implications for understanding how humans use social cues to establish and maintain social interactions in the context of everyday and digital communications.

Research information:

Alison Flynn is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biomolecular Sciences at the University of Ottawa. Her research lies in two main areas related to education: learning in chemistry/science and how students develop their learning skills in any discipline (mindsets, metacognition, goal-setting, resilience, self-regulated learning, and mindfulness). Her work includes developing open-access online learning tools and flipped and blended course structures to support student learning, especially in large classes. Her research group studies student learning in organic chemistry (FlynnResearchGroup.com). As uOttawa’s 2016 Chair in University Teaching, she developed and evaluated the Growth & Goals module. This module can be integrated in courses in any discipline and level, or stand alone. Her group studies the impact for this module for students. She was recently accepted into the 3M National Teaching Fellowship, Canada’s highest recognition for excellence in education at the post-secondary level. At the provincial level, she is a Director on eCampusOntario’s Board; this organization brings together all the provinces universities and colleges to foster technology-enabled innovation, research, and excellence on behalf of students. At the National level, she is helping to build Canada’s strength in Chemistry Education Research (ChemEdCanada.com), and is the Canadian Society for Chemistry’s Director of Accreditation. Internationally, she is part of an IUPAC-funded international team that is exploring learning outcomes focused on systems thinking in chemistry. She is also a member of the Global Young Academy and co-leads the GYA’s Science Advice Working Group. In all her work, she is committed to helping students succeed in their chosen careers and goals.

I am interested in the experiences of vulnerable populations and much of my work connects research with community organizations serving those in need. My research focuses on evaluating the impacts of a range of programs, including student support services, addiction recovery programs, family support programs, mentoring programs, training programs and leadership development programs. I am currently working on a major study on excellence in the large classroom and am examining the communication behaviours of professors who excel in this environment.

Research information:

Trained in demography and sociology, I defended my PhD in 2004. I am interested in social and demographic changes in West Africa. I explore these issues by studying family dynamics and gender relationships, working more particularly on education, migration and family reconfigurations through marriage processes. I also work on the ethical issues related to our research methodologies through the lenses of pedagogic decolonisation in the academic environment. My current projects are on young and adolescent girls' educational dynamics in Senegal, and on immigrants' social participation to the host society in Canada/Québec.
