Research information:

I work with lasers that produce very short flashes of light - flashes as short as 1/10,000,000,000,000,000 or one hundred attoseconds.  I use these pulses to study very fast processes or to machine materials very precisely.

Research information:

I study how nonlinear systems can generate unpredictable behaviour including chaos. I also study how this behaviour is influenced by various sources of noise such as environmental fluctuations. This research is applied to the neurosciences, where I seek to understand how our senses code information about the outside physical world, and to unravel the secrets of the codes used by the brain. It is also applied to physiological variability such as that of heart rate and breathing rate in health and disease, using also nonlinear time series methods. My mathematical models make predictions about experimental outcomes in my colleagues' neurobiological and clinical laboratories. I am interested finally in plasticity and memory formation, neurotransmitter balance in mental health, the role of feedback between brain areas, and the behaviours of neurons under trauma.

Research information:

My team studies the strange and uniquely quantum behaviour of single particles of light, photons. Our goal is to build computers and sensors inside which all the information is carried on photons. Such ‘quantum computers’ will be able to solve problems that are currently intractable and such sensors will have dramatically enhanced sensitivity.

Research information:

Our research group uses ultrafast optical techniques to improve the general understanding of microscopic interactions and quantum transitions in materials. We rely on lasers and custom-made optical tools to study the physical origin of some of the most intriguing phenomena such as superconductivity. We study and explore ultrafast dynamics inside 2D materials, semiconductors, organic compounds and biological samples.

Research information:

Our team studies controlled interdiffusion of materials at the interface of nanostructures. One can thus obtain control over the physical properties of semiconductor Quantum Dots (QDs). For example, one can tune the uniformity of the optical properties of a QD ensemble. In turn, this allows us to study and better describe the properties of zero-dimensional electron-hole droplets, or to fabricate widely tuneable lasers.
