Research information:

Elena Baranova’s Laboratory of Electrochemical Engineering in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering applies advanced electrochemical processes to greenhouse gas mitigation, waste valorization and energy storage. Using well-defined, nano-structured electrocatalysts and renewable electricity, we convert waste carbon dioxide (CO2) to value-added chemicals. In addition, glycerol electrochemical valourization simultaneously with the green hydrogen (H2) production are in the centre of our research initiatives. Keywords: green hydrogen, CO2 conversion to value-added products, greenhouse gas mitigation, nanoparticle catalyst, renewable electricity, energy-storage

Research information:

My research group combines isotope geochemistry and numerical modeling to develop and apply 1) isotope geolocation tools in ecology and forensics sciences, 2) isotope tracers of chemical weathering processes in hydrology, and 3) isotope proxies for paleoenvironmental reconstruction. The data and products generated in this research program have wide-reaching relevance to the investigation of forensic cases, traceability of food, implementation of wildlife conservation policies, improvement of water management practices, and reconstruction of paleoenvironments in Canada and beyond.

Research information:

Our research targets novel approaches for the efficient syntheses of nitrogen-containing molecules. Over 90% of pharmaceuticals possess at least one nitrogen atom in their structure, and nitrogen atoms are also prevalent in agrochemicals, and in bulk chemicals (for example isocyanates used in the paints, coatings and form industries).

I work with lasers that produce very short flashes of light - flashes as short as 1/10,000,000,000,000,000 or one hundred attoseconds.  I use these pulses to study very fast processes or to machine materials very precisely.

Our research is targeting important industrial issues related to the production of commodity chemicals. To this end, we are synthesizing and characterizing new catalytic systems based on several transition metals with the goal of to improving catalytic behavior through the understanding of the reaction mechanisms. As part of mechanistic studies we are also endeavouring the isolation of catalytically active intermediates.  The processes targeted are olefin polymerization and selective oligomerization.  These studies are conducted in close collaboration with the University of Eindhoven (The Netherlands) and Industrial sector (Dutch Polymer Institute, Sabic).

Research information:

My main field of research is targeting the salt-sensitive high blood pressure. This particular kind of high blood pressure has been connected with a genetic component that is inherited from parents to offspring and that is usually exacerbated by high salt-intake. As a Geneticist Candidate and a Pharmacist, I am investigating the genes that might be involved in transmitting that genetic form of high blood pressure.
