University concludes major deal with IBM, Lenovo

IBM Lab of the FutureUniversity of Ottawa students will benefit from the recent $25-million agreement the University made with IBM Canada Ltd. and Lenovo (Canada) Inc. through advanced technology, research and career opportunities.

In addition, IBM and Lenovo will make a joint contribution valued at more than $7 million to the Campaign for Canada’s university and provide a wide array of products and services over the five-year agreement.

The University of Ottawa has dedicated a student lab for IBM and Lenovo products. The “IBM Lab of the Future” is located in the School of Information Technology and Engineering.

The University will have access to IBM’s industry-leading software for use in teaching and research. Computer science students and faculty will be able to work on various projects using cutting-edge research and to cooperate with the IBM Ottawa Software Lab, a world-class software development facility with 280 skilled developers. These opportunities will contribute to an enriched curriculum, which will in turn provide the students with increased co-op and career opportunities.

The agreement builds on a relationship between the University and IBM that began ten years ago. It has since evolved to include such projects as LINUX mission critical systems, a student portal and online registration, and joint multiple research projects such as the Canada Century Research Infrastructure Project, which uses IBM technology.
