Major appointments in research sector

Nicolas Georganas is appointed associate vice-president research (external) and Joe Irvine becomes director of Technology Transfer and Business Enterprise (TTBE).

Georganas was appointed for a three-year term starting May 1, 2005. In this newly created position, he will work with Howard Alper, vice-president, research, to advance the University’s strategic research efforts with a focus on external programs. He will manage the portfolios of international research, technology transfer and business enterprise, government research investment programs and research communications.

Georganas has held a Canada Research Chair in Information Technology at the University of Ottawa since 2001 and was the founding dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Ottawa. He holds degrees from the University of Ottawa, the National Technical University of Athens and the Technische Universität in Darmstadt.

Joe Irvine’s mandate at TTBE starts on May 15, 2005 and includes technology transfer, intellectual property and contracts management. He brings a vast amount of experience to the University, most recently as vice-president of
medical affairs and business development at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI) and as president of the Ottawa Heart Institute Research Corporation (OHIRC).
