“While we’ve received larger donations from corporations and foundations, this is a tremendous gift by an accomplished alumna of the University of Ottawa,” says David Mitchell, vice-president of university relations.
“The Faculty of Law already has an international reputation as a leader in the field of social justice initiatives,” says Bruce Feldthusen, dean of the Common Law Section. “This gift will build on that by strengthening our teaching and research related to feminist perspectives on law and by maintaining and developing links between women in the legal academy and women in the legal profession. This is a unique gift, from a unique woman.”
Feldthusen says that gifts of this size to study the role of women in the legal profession are rare, and this gift may well be unprecedented.
Greenberg founded the first all-female law practice in the city, and received an honorary doctorate from the University in 2003. Greenberg and her family also made to donations to help create the Shirley E. Greenberg Centre for Women’s Health at The Ottawa Hospital and the Irving Greenberg Theatre Centre at the Great Canadian Theatre Company.
