uOttawa research funding tops $180 million

According to the Research Infosource 2004 report on the 50 top research universities in Canada, the University of Ottawa had the second-largest proportional growth in research funds of all Ontario universities last year. Total research funding at the University of Ottawa went from $152.2 million to $186.2 million, an increase of 22.3 percent.

Among Ontario institutions, only Wilfrid Laurier University, which saw its research funding more than double from $5 million to $11 million, had a higher growth rate.

The University now ranks 8th in Canada in terms of total research funding and holds 4th place in Ontario for the average grant per researcher at $185,800.

According to the report, Canada's top 50 research universities posted $4.3 billion in government and non-government sponsored research income, a 12.6 percent increase over the previous year. The lion's share of the income (69 per cent) came from government sources.

Meanwhile, health research now accounts for almost a quarter of total Canadian domestic expenditures on R&D.
