Nursing historian wins second award

Professor Cynthia Toman of the Faculty of Health Sciences has received the 2004 Teresa E. Christy Award from the American Association for the History of Nursing.

This award recognizes an outstanding doctoral thesis on the history of nursing. In 1990, it was given to Meryn Stuart who is also a professor in the School of Nursing and was, coincidentally, one of Toman’s thesis co-supervisors along with history professor Ruby Heap.

Toman, who received her doctorate last fall, was also awarded the Governor General’s Gold Medal for her thesis on Second World War Canadian military nurses.

She will receive the Christy Award during the association’s conference in Atlanta at the end of the month.
