“Mother of all studies” launched at OHRI

Doctors are hoping to gather blood and DNA from thousands of pregnant Ottawa women to determine what effects pregnancy has on a growing child. The study, which will track the babies into their adulthood, is likely the most elaborate of its kind in Canada - perhaps even the world.

The $2.5-million collaborative study, which will examine 8,000 mother-baby pairs, is being led by Ottawa Health Research Institute scientist, Dr. Mark Walker, and his team in Obstetrics and Maternal Newborns Investigative Program.

Dubbed the "mother of all studies" by media and health insiders, the study was loosely based on another study that tracked the lifestyles and medical histories of more than 5,000 men and women in a small U.S. town.
