For the first time in its history, the Faculty of Social Sciences has received over $1 million in new standard research grants from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. Another new record has been established – 10 standard research grants.
“I am delighted not only at the number of grants and the amounts, but also at the number of new professors whose requests were approved,” said associate dean, Barry Schneider. “Our Faculty takes pride not only in the bottom line of research dollars, but also in the innovative character and social relevance of the research topics this funding makes possible.”
The proposals themselves reflect the diversity of the faculty and their commitment to the scientific study of important social issues. Prof. Manon Tremblay will be studying the role of women in the Canadian political scene. Prof. Louise Lemyre is learning about how people manage the perceived threat of a terrorist attack. The social and legal aspects of genomics research are the topic of a grant received by Prof. José Lopez. Two of the grants will focus attention on the daily lives of members of minority groups: Prof. Ann Denis on Internet use and Prof. Scott Simon on ethnic dimensions of development in Taiwan.
