The Faculty of Arts attracted a record amount of new research funding in 2004. “The Faculty of Arts can celebrate a truly exceptional success this year,” said associate dean, research, Antoni Lewkowicz.
Total new funds awarded to faculty researchers by the granting councils rose from $1.6 million in 2003 – itself a record year – to almost $3 million this year, an increase of more than 80 per cent.
The overall success rate for SSHRC projects led by full-time professors in the Faculty was 62 per cent, compared to the national average of 43 per cent.“Nearly 30 professors and many graduate student assistants will benefit from the use of these funds,” Lewkowicz noted.
He made the remarks on April 29 during a Faculty reception in honour of France Martineau who was named Professor of the Year. An expert in old and middle French, Martineau has received the largest new grant in the Faculty: $222,000 over three years to examine the evolution and variation of Québec French in the 17th to 19th centuries.
Martineau received the award because she showed excellence in all three areas of a professor’s workload: teaching, research and service, said Dean Tibor Egervari, who presented the award.
In the past few years, she has been heavily involved with the Concours provincial de français de l’Ontario, as the representative of the University, and later as president and co-organizer.
