Bursary supports students

  Hogarth Bursary

The recently established D. M. Hogarth Bursary honours the memory of Donald MacDonald Hogarth (1878-1950), a man who enjoyed Canadian history as a fervent digression throughout his busy life.

A native of Mattawa, Ontario, Hogarth entered provincial politics in 1911, representing his adopted riding of Port Arthur (now part of Thunder Bay) as MPP for five terms. At the outset of World War I, he enlisted as a private in the Canadian Army, and retired in 1919 as Major General Hogarth, DSO, CMG. Following his discharge, he turned to business activities, particularly in mine development and mining promotion. In 1996, he was inducted posthumously into the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame.

Students in the Department of History will benefit greatly from this donation says student Amy Gill. “This kind of support makes it possible for bright students to follow this worthy passion, by validating the importance of research.”

Much appreciation is extended to Earth Sciences Adjunct Professor Don Hogarth, D. M. Hogarth’s son, for facilitating the annual $1,500 bursary. It is available to third- or fourth-year history students studying full-time, who are in good academic standing and in financial need.
