Community spirit and solidarity will fill the air September 19 to 21 as friends of the University of Ottawa, both old and new, gather to celebrate Homecoming 2008. This year's organizing committee promises an eclectic mix of activities and events.
The celebration kicks off Friday, September 19 with the Homecoming Casino on the lawns of Tabaret Hall. Special guest Elvis Presley will keep things jailhouse rockin' as revelers place their bets and get re-acquainted on Homecoming opening night.
For a helping of fresh pancakes, be sure to sit yourself down at the Alumni Association Breakfast the next morning, Saturday, September 20. If you prefer a football fix, head to Frank Clair Stadium for the Gee-Gees' game at 1 p.m. against the Waterloo Warriors. Be sure to recharge your batteries after, though, so you can stay up for the all-night movie marathon back on campus.
On Sunday, general celebrations cap off on a nostalgic note with the unveiling of the Felix Leclerc Memorial. Homecoming coordinator, Anne-Marie Fontaine, explains the event's background: "The classes of '62 and '63 established a fund for their 25th anniversary. The committee decided to use the money to have a major project completed every ten years. Back in 1998, for instance, the University coat of arms was installed on the facade of Tabaret Hall. This year is the 20th anniversary of Felix Leclerc's death, so both classes wanted to not only honour his memory but also remind everyone that he studied at the University of Ottawa, too, from 1928 to 1933."
A staple at Homecoming is the friendly, relaxed atmosphere, making each and every activity all-the-more enjoyable. What's more, admission to most events is free or offered at reduced prices.
Finally, to encourage students to attend, the Homecoming Committee is also tapping into the Facebook phenomenon this year.
