Biology professor receives Young Scientist Award

Professor Rees Kassen of the Department of Biology is the 2008 Robert H. Haynes Young Scientist Award recipient. The award, given by the Genetics Society of Canada,  recognizes a notable paper or series of related papers based on original research in genetics or allied fields.

Kassen, who holds the University Research Chair in Experimental Evolution, is recognized as a world leader in developing experimental tests of evolutionary theory showing the way in developing practical applications in the field of environmental change research. More recently, he launched a new research direction focused on using evolutionary principles to understand and treat antibiotic resistant infections in cystic fibrosis patients.

Virtually all of Kassen’s peer-reviewed publications since 2000 have appeared in leading journals and have been highlighted in both the academic and popular presses. Kassen is a recipient of the Michael Smith Promising Young Scientist Award from the Ottawa Life Sciences Council and the Early Researcher Award from the Province of Ontario, Ministry of Research and Innovation.
