The history of sexuality and “the Pill” in Canada

Christabelle Sethna’s research focuses on the history of sex, the body, sex education and birth control in Canada. Her research looks at the kinds of messages Canadians have received and continue to receive about sexuality, STDs, reproduction and birth control technologies. She likes to investigate how these issues affect different groups of women, based on age, race, class, ethnicity and sexual orientation.

Presently, she is studying the history of the birth control pill in Canada. She relates this research to various contemporary topics, such as unintended pregnancy, AIDS, contraception, adolescent sexuality, women’s health, sex education curriculums, and reproductive rights.

Christabelle Sethna has also applied as a co-investigator for a Canadian Institutes for Health Research grant to study the impact of globalization on women’s health with academics from Toronto, Iran, Spain, and Brazil.
