Two leaders in building community and media relations

  Errol Mendes et Guy Laflamme

Two media-savvy professors were honored on October 9 with the President’s Award for Service to the University through Media and Community Relations. Professors Guy Laflamme and Errol Mendes, this year’s recipients, “truly reinforce the value that we place on making what we do more accessible to the broader community,” said President Gilles Patry.

Guy Laflamme knows firsthand the impact of community outreach. Two-years ago, the media was captivated by the story of this Telfer School of Management professor and his students who developed and implemented a marketing strategy for Niger.

The resulting aid campaign “Making Niger our Business” has since raised more than $40,000 in donations and $250,000 in medical equipment and other products, and established a close collaboration between the University and the University of Niame.

Professor Errol Mendes is a recognized expert in constitutional law, human rights law, globalization, and public and private sector governance. He is sought after by media to make sense of new developments in all these areas.

Former director of the University of Ottawa’s Human Rights Research and Education Centre, Professor Mendes teaches in the Faculty of Law, Common Law Section. In addition to his work in the academic community, Professor Mendes has served as an advisor on human rights and governance issues, and business ethics. This wide experience has made Professor Mendes a valuable social commentator.

Congratulations to both recipients.
