When guests at a reception honouring Professor Marie-Nicole Cossette were asked to suggest an appropriate title for her autobiography, one suggestion that resonated with many was “A woman who makes a difference.”

Praised as a “communications enthusiast,” Professor Cossette’s commitment was celebrated by students, colleagues, family and friends at the reception held on September 27 as part of the Homecoming celebrations.

The impact of Professor Cossette was felt by students and faculty alike throughout her 22-year career (1980-2002) with the Department of Communication, where she taught organizational communication. Known for her ability to get the best from her students and her contagious enthusiasm, her delight was obvious when in addition to those in attendance, messages came from former students and colleagues.

“Nicole was a devoted, attentive and generous professor, always in touch with the needs of her students. She is an example to us all,” says Denis Bachand, chair of the Department of Communication.

To underscore the importance of Marie-Nicole Cossette’s contributions, Denis Bachand announced the creation of the Marie-Nicole Cossette Grant. This annual bursary will be granted to an outstanding student in organizational communication. Cassandra Blier, a fourth-year student, was named the first recipient of the award.

Professor Cossette is gradually relearning to walk and speak after suffering a stroke in December 2002. The gathering of students, alumni and colleagues could hardly have been a more fitting tribute to Professor Cossette’s spirit and determination.
