  Luc Bonneville

Luc Bonneville, Professor, Department of Communication

What is your most important function at the University and why?

I am a professor and researcher in organizational communication within the Department of Communication. My teaching touches upon group dynamics, communications management in an organizational context and computerization of the workplace. My research focuses on the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) for medical purposes (Tele-medicine and Tele-health).

What is it about your job that inspires you most?

The idea of combining the two most important dimensions of my work — research and teaching — letting one feed the other on a daily basis. For me, creating and disseminating knowledge are the most important and fascinating aspects of my career.

How did you get interested in your field of research?

During my academic studies in sociology, I had the opportunity to touch upon many other social sciences and humanities, such as philosophy, anthropology, economy, management and psychology. My interest in questions relating to technology, society and organizations, became the basis of my doctoral dissertation (for which I received two awards from different organizations) which in turn led me to postdoctoral research within the Faculty of Medicine at the Université de Montreal.

It became obvious very quickly, that to get an in-depth analysis of communicational and organizational phenomena, scientific disciplines were imperative. As a result, I hold a very distinctive position, within this department, that is multidisciplinary in nature.

What was your life’s proudest moment?

Three important events took place in my life within the same year: 1) my doctoral thesis defence; 2) my daughter’s birth; and 3) becoming a professor here at the University of Ottawa.

What would your co-workers be most surprised to know about you?

My different, cyclical and often unexpected personalities outside office hours.

What is your favourite pastime?

Reading, above all.

You’ve just won a $1 million. What do you do?

I will change absolutely nothing in my life, being absolutely content.

What is the quality you value the most?

Thoroughness is, without a doubt, one of my most valued qualities. I like a job well done, regardless of the field of endeavour.
