Each year, the Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation grants more than 900 scholarships throughout the country under the Excellence Award Program. These are divided into national, provincial/territorial and local awards.

In 2003, the University of Ottawa attracted 10 out of the 100 national millennium excellence awards recipients. This represents a major increase over previous years as the University has been attracting on average one to three percent of national award recipients.

“The jump is definitely significant,” said Franca Gucciardi, director of the Millennium Excellence Award Program. “Our national excellence award laureates are not only strong academic students, they are also creative community leaders. So, to have this many pick the University of Ottawa means a lot.”

During a November 26 reception on campus to honour millennium scholarship recipients, Rector Gilles Patry noted that these awards allow students “to pursue their dreams and reach their potential as scholars and citizens. They provide opportunities to some of the best and brightest students in Canada.”

“Our recipients are outstanding,” Patry said. “The excellence awards that they have received are evidence of our institution’s tradition of excellence.”
