Support staff vote for unionization

The certification vote for members of the support staff who are not represented by the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC) was counted on June 29, 2007 in Toronto by the Ontario Labour Relations Board. A total of 784 votes were included: 609 votes for the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF), 135 against and 39 votes segregated.

Under Ontario law, more than 50 per cent support is required for certification. With 78 per cent of the votes cast in favour of OSSTF, this means that OSSTF will represent the members of the support staff not represented by PIPSC or who are not excluded by reason of the agreed upon bargaining unit description.

Bargaining unit arrangements and a formal negotiation process will follow in the coming weeks. The University looks forward to working with OSSTF in the negotiation of this first collective agreement.

For on-going information about the unionization process, as it becomes available, please consult the Human Resources Service Web site. More details will also be available in the Gazette once the bargaining unit arrangements have been determined.
