University budget projects expenses of $736 million in 2007-2008

The 2007-2008 University of Ottawa budget projects expenses of $736 million, up from $679 million in 2006-2007. This includes $55 million in student scholarships and financial aid — an increase of $10 million over last year. The budget also comprises an investment of $54 million in capital projects, including the completion of the Desmarais Building and the Roger Guindon expansion projects.

The University’s strategic plan, Vision 2010, continues to have a significant impact on this year’s budget, approved by the Board of Governors on May 28, 2007.

Some new initiatives include:

The University will invest $1.6 million to recruit faculty and staff to lead the development of the Institute of Official Languages and Bilingualism.

More than $300,000 has been earmarked for several international activities including the establishment of an Institute of International Environmental Law. The budgets of the Office of International Research and the International Office were each increased by $300,000 to promote international research and partnerships with universities abroad.

More than $3 million has been allocated to reduce class size and introduce innovative academic programming. This will see the creation of 46 additional faculty positions and 42 support staff positions.

To offer students an unparalleled university experience, $2.9 million will be invested to improve the Student Information System and the wireless network will be expanded at a cost of more than $1.9 million. A further investment of $2.4 million for classroom multi-media and video-conferencing equipment has been allocated, as well as $4 million for library renovations and collection acquisitions.

Leadership training centres, staff training and employee recognition programs will benefit from $800,000 of funding.
