The Capital Educators’ Awards celebrate the contributions of educators from Ottawa’s publicly funded elementary and secondary schools, as well as colleges and universities.
On May 24, four uOttawa professors were among the 20 honoured as being the most innovative and respected educators in the city. The following demonstrate just some of the reasons for these exceptional choices.
Robert Gaucher, Department of Criminology, Faculty of Social Sciences, brings the often dismissed voice of the marginalized, criminalized and disenfranchised into public debates. Professor Gaucher established the Infinity-Lifers Liaison Group, which brings university students into contact with lifers at Collins Bay Institution in Kingston, Ontario.
Dr. Janet Nuth, Department of Emergency Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, is actively involved in her faculty as a clinician and an educator. Recently, Dr. Nuth co developed a four-week emergency medicine clerkship for third-year undergraduate students. This program is, now, a recognized model for the development of emergency medicine in Canada.
Mark Salter, School of Political Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, is notorious among his students for his extraordinary capacity to communicate his knowledge and passion. Putting theory into practice, Professor Salter hosts a CHUO radio show, Around the World in 30 Minutes, where students present their research through on air interviews with Professor Salter.
Rachel Thibeault, School of Rehabilitation Sciences, Faculty of Health Sciences, inspires her students by demanding that they use their knowledge to make a meaningful contribution to their community, especially to those in need. Leading by example, Professor Thibeault created the first-ever course based on UN recommendations for higher education as outlined in the Millennium Development Goals.
