World-renowned stroke expert Dr. Antoine Hakim is a winner of a MEDEC Award for Medical Achievement. MEDEC is the association representing the medical device industry in Canada.
Dr. Hakim is being recognized for his work on the investigation of biochemical, ionic, molecular and receptor events that affect cerebral vulnerability in stroke. He has dedicated significant efforts to scientific discovery in stroke and its application to improve stroke prevention, care and rehabilitation. Dr. Hakim has received many honours throughout his career, including being appointed as an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2007.
Dr. Hakim is a professor and the chair of neurology at the Faculty of Medicine, the director of neuroscience research at the Ottawa Health Research Institute, a neurologist at the Ottawa Hospital, and the scientific director of the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Centre for Stroke Recovery.
