Hot on the heels of the announcement of exceeding the target for the Campaign for Canada’s university, the fundraising efforts show no sign of waning. President Gilles Patry kicked off the University’s first-ever 48-hour campus campaign, entitled “Putting Students First.” On May 28 and 29, the University invites support staff and faculty to renew their financial commitment in support of students.

The goal is to raise $200,000 during this two-day endeavour. “We are so committed to this initiative that the University will match all donations made during the campaign,” said President Patry at a breakfast for campus campaign donors. All funds raised will go towards the University’s financial aid program for students.

The University community has a history of giving generously in support of students. In addition to monetary donations, staff contribute through gifts-in-kind, pledges and other giving options. It is obvious that uOttawa is a generous and caring community.

For President Patry, the success of the campus campaign is really the foundation of the major capital campaign, which celebrated its astounding success by going beyond its $200-million target a year ahead of schedule.
(The campaign has now reached $226 million.) “The ongoing and growing support of members of our own campus community gives us increased confidence in seeking and attracting the support of alumni and friends across the country,” he said.

Leading the countdown to the 48 hours that count are Professor Jenepher Lennox Terrion from the Department of Communication and Gaby St-Pierre from the Co-operative Education Programs. Both are uOttawa alumni. As co-chairs of the “Putting Students First” campaign, they know funds raised will help many students, including those who do not attend university due to lack of finances.

They invite all staff to mark their calendars for May 28 and May 29. A barbecue will be held on Monday, May 28 at noon on the lawn of Tabaret Hall to celebrate the campaign. Bring your vintage uOttawa clothing, jewellery and accessories and join the fun.
