The use of laptop computers on campus has grown significantly and will keep growing as the University makes wireless connection technologies increasingly available in public spaces. With the launch of its Stop Theft program, Protection Services is taking a proactive approach to preventing the theft of laptops.
Stop Theft is an anti-theft and recovery program, designed mostly for computers. Identification plates installed on laptops act as a deterrent to theft and also facilitate the recovery of computers if they are ever lost or stolen. Any attempt to remove the plate will generate a chemically bonded tattoo that marks “Stolen Property” on the computer. Stop Theft plates can also be installed on other electronic devices, such as iPods.
Claude Giroux, director of Protection Services, says, “Theft of laptops is not a large problem. By putting this program in place, we are trying to prevent thefts from happening and educate students and staff about smart wireless use.” Giroux adds that the new program complements the existing Operation Identification and gives students and staff additional protection.
Faculties and university services that wish to use the Stop Theft program should contact Protection Services’ Nathalie Jacob at 613-562-5800, ext. 6314, or Martin Grégoire, ext. 6654. Students can purchase Stop Theft plates (at a cost of $20 per plate) by contacting Protection Services.
