Concerned about the environment? Consider carpooling

Recent news from the International Government Panel on Climate Change has many people considering their collective and individual responsibilities for protecting the environment.

For individuals, one immediate way to impact the environment is carpooling, if you are not already using other enviro-friendly means of getting to campus. The University’s carpool policy is part of the Transportation Demand Management (TDM) program. If you wish to form or join a carpool, the TDM program has subscribed to a state-of-the-art ride-matching Web site, which was designed by professionals in the field of sustainable transportation. The use of this Web site is free and restricted to the University.

Two new spin-offs from the carpooling program were recently launched. “We recognized the contributions made by carpoolers and so, as part of the TDM program, we have created an Emergency Ride Home and a Preferential Parking Program,” says Danny Albert, TDM coordinator. “The programs are a way of thanking and promoting carpooling as a sustainable method of transportation.”

The Emergency Ride Home program is just that: a ride home for carpoolers in the event of an emergency. The Preferential Parking program on the other hand allows carpoolers to access reserved parking spaces. Registered carpool members will no longer have the hassle of looking for a parking space.

For additional information on the above programs and to learn if you qualify for the Preferential Parking Program, visit www.protection.uOttawa.ca or contact the TDM Coordinator at danny.albert@uOttawa.ca or 613-562-5800, ext. 6523.
