Staff alumni chapter unique to uOttawa

Alumni Relations is an important activity at most North American universities because it helps to build allegiances to the institutions. Alumni loyalty normally takes the form of fundraising or raising the profile of the institution through networking. However, here at the University of Ottawa, some alumni have another way of showing their commitment — they work for their alma mater.

The University of Ottawa has approximately 6,800 employees, including faculty and staff. Estimates indicate that some 700 of those employees are alumni. “We are unique in having a staff chapter as part of our alumni association,” says Guy Larocque, director of alumni relations.

Denise St. Jean, president of the Staff Chapter of the Alumni Association, adds, “Our staff chapter members are so proud to be a member of the University of Ottawa community that they chose it as their employer. They take pride in and give back to the University community on a daily basis in their jobs.”

Chapter members have the opportunity to meet and network with other employees through activities. In 2006, these included the Homecoming Breakfast, uOttawa Community Garage Sale, sale of entertainment books, monthly Early-Riser’s Breakfast and the upcoming Holiday Breakfast. To meet the interests and needs of the membership, the Executive Committee welcomes suggestions for other activities.

Employees of the University wishing to identify themselves as alumni may contact: Denise St. Jean, president, 613-562-5800, ext. 2482 or dsjean@uOttawa.ca, or vice-president Patrick Courcelles at ext. 2273 or pcourcel@uOttawa.ca.

Alumni and staff can meet chapter members and learn more about their activities by joining them at the upcoming Staff Chapter Holiday Breakfast on Wednesday, December 6, at 8 a.m., at Le Resto-Pub Jazzy, University Centre. Alumna Pamela Harrod, secretary of the University, will be its special guest. To purchase a ticket, contact John Udvarhelyi, 613-562-5800, ext. 4669 or Arlette Henry, at ext. 1908.
