On November 7, 2006, the University brought together more than 350 distinguished guests, including former prime minister, the Right Hon. Jean Chrétien, to celebrate the best of Canada — both the people and the symbols that our country represents.

The Distinguished Canadian Leadership Awards (DCLA) were presented in the heart of Ottawa at the National Gallery of Canada, providing a particularly Canadian backdrop – as did the national treasures found within, including the cherished Stanley Cup.

The DCLA annually recognize excellence in the accomplishments of its impressive recipients; accomplishments that equally define the building blocks upon which Canada was built — justice, entrepreneurial spirit, human rights and, in this year’s case, hockey.

This year’s recipients included hockey great Jean Béliveau; Stephen Jarislowsky, chairman and CEO of Jarislowsky Fraser Limited — one of Canada’s largest and most successful investment management firms; and Louise Arbour, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. The recipient of this year’s Meritas-Tabaret Award was journalist Mary Lou Finlay, one of Canada’s most treasured radio broadcasting hosts, but recently retired from the CBC.
