André Dabrowski: a cherished colleague and mentor

It was with great sadness that the University of Ottawa community learned of the death of Dr. André Robert Dabrowski, dean of the Faculty of Science. Professor Dabrowski died on Saturday, October 7, following a short and courageous battle with cancer. He had been appointed dean in June 2006.

Dabrowski’s career spanned more than 20 years at the University, where he was professor of Mathematics and held various administrative positions. His devotion to learning and innovation is remembered by his colleagues and students.

“I had worked with Professor Dabrowski when he was acting dean in 2003,” said vice-president academic and provost Robert Major, “and was impressed by his clear vision, pragmatic approach and strong commitment to the Faculty of Science and especially its students. I was looking forward to collaborating with him again to enable the faculty to meet its strategic goals. His death is a great loss to the whole University community.”

An extensively published professor and researcher in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Dabrowski was an alumnus of the University receiving bachelor’s and master’s degrees in science in the 1970s. He taught at the University of Ottawa since 1990.

The University offers its condolences to Professor Dabrowski’s family, in particular to his wife Deborah and his children Adam and Leah. At press time, arrangements for a University memorial service had not been finalized.
