Alumnus elected president of major lawyers’ group

David ScottCommon Law alumnus David W. Scott, QC was elected president of the American College of Trial Lawyers on November 1. He is the first Canadian elected to this position in the history of the College, one of the premier legal associations in North America.

Having practiced law in Ottawa for 42 years, Scott is senior partner and co-chair of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP. He was inducted as a fellow of the College in 1984 and has previously served as member of the Board of Regents, the governing body of the College, for seven years.

Founded in 1950, the College has about 5,300 members across the U.S. and Canada. Fellowship in the College is extended by invitation only and lawyers must have a minimum of fifteen years’ trial experience before they can be considered for it.

Common Law Dean Bruce Feldthusen said:“Scott, who also holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Ottawa, is widely considered one of Canada’s greatest litigators. The Faculty is grateful for his active support in the classroom and in the legal community.”
