Professor emeritus John Last of uOttawa’s Faculty of Medicine is the recent recipient of the R. D. Defries Award, the highest award of the Canadian Public Health Association (CPHA). The award ceremony took place at the 97th Annual Conference of the CPHA on May 29, in Vancouver.
A well-respected epidemiologist, Dr. Last is the author of many books, as well as more than 200 articles and editorials, and numerous reports and official documents for the World Health Organization, the governments of Canada and Ontario and other official agencies.
Dr. Last led the International Epidemiological Association’s initiative to develop guidelines on ethical conduct of epidemiological research, practice, and teaching, and was a member of the Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences Working Group, which drafted international guidelines for the Ethical Review of Epidemiological Studies (1991).
“The University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Medicine is extremely privileged to benefit from Dr. Last’s knowledge and wisdom,” said Dr. Peter Walker, dean of the faculty. “Through his passion and his dedication to his work, Dr. Last has inspired countless students and colleagues.”
Dr. Last was a professor with the University’s Department of Epidemiology and Community Medicine from 1969 to 1992.
The R. D. Defries Award is presented annually for outstanding contributions in the field of public health, preference being given to Canadian contributions and individuals who have substantially supported the objectives of CPHA.
