In a late May ceremony, the University of Ottawa family extended a big thank you to Christian Detellier, who will step down this summer from his deanship at the Faculty of Science, but will continue his teaching and research activities.

Detellier first joined the Department of Chemistry in 1980 as a visiting professor. In 1993, he became assistant dean of the Faculty of Science, and took over as dean in 1997.

During his term as dean, he led the faculty through a period of significant growth:

•    The faculty doubled in size, expanding from 1,750 students in 1997 to a record 3,458 students in 2005, to become the third largest at the University.

•    Marion and Gendron halls were renovated and all three phases of the biosciences complex were completed. The complex houses state-of–the-art classrooms, laboratories and three major research units: the Centre for Advanced Research in Environmental Genomics, the Centre for Catalysis and Research Innovation and the Centre for Research in Biopharmaceuticals and Biotechnology.

•    Many landmark programs were created in biopharmaceutical science, biomedical science and ophthalmic medical technology.

•    The University recently entered a partnership with the National Research Council (NRC) in the National High Field Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Facility for Solids and Materials.

To celebrate Christian Detellier’s career accomplishments, the Faculty of Science has established The Christian Detellier Scholarship Fund with donations from faculty, students and staff. The scholarships will be awarded to future science students. This fund will be doubled thanks to the Ontario Trust for Student Support Program through which the Ontario government matches contributions dollar-for-dollar.

“The scholarship creates a legacy to remind students in the faculty of all the work Christian has done for them,” said Tom Moon, vice-dean (research) in the Faculty of Science.

“I am very touched by this gift,” said Detellier. “This is the best thing you could offer me.”
