From February 10 to 12, 2006 the University of Ottawa will host student delegates from Ontario and Quebec in the third annual University of Ottawa Model United Nations High School Conference.
Organized and run by the International Affairs Association, formerly the Model United Nations Club, this year’s conference will feature crisis committee sessions. A “crisis staff” made up of uOttawa moderators will brief delegates about a historical event. Acting as representatives of the assigned countries, the participants will then prepare and debate the appropriate UN response.
“The crisis committee sessions allow the students to hone their leadership and presentation skills,” says Emily Lam, this year’s secretary-general and a third-year uOttawa political science and history student. “It also allows more participation than in general assembly sessions with all the delegates assembled at once.”
The three-day conference will open on the Friday night, when students will have the opportunity to get to know one another. A full day of workshops will follow on Saturday, with final sessions, delegate awards and closing ceremonies taking place on Sunday. About 100 students are expected to attend the event.
