Medicine, law students to benefit from $1 million plus estate gift
OTTAWA, February 19, 2015 — Thanks to a gift of over $1 million from the estate of the late Audrey Jacqueline Boyce, students from the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Law, Common Law Section, at the University of Ottawa will now be eligible for additional financial support. This is one of largest planned gifts ever received by the University of Ottawa.
Ms. Boyce was a lifelong Ottawa resident. Born in 1920, she was a career federal civil servant in the departments of Agriculture and Justice. She loved the idea of creating a “ripple effect,” making a gift that would help multiple generations of students to reach their goal of achieving a higher education. Before she passed away in 2013, she chose to direct her bequests towards medicine and common law students.
“We are grateful for the generous gift from Ms. Boyce’s estate. Donations are important for the University. They help us improve the student experience through financial aid, research funds and countless projects that help students fulfill their dreams,” said Allan Rock, president and vice-chancellor.
The gift has allowed the University to create two new annual bursaries for common law students in financial need (one undergrad and one graduate student), and one MD/PhD fellowship for medical research.
“I feel honoured and truly privileged to be the first recipient of the Audrey J. Boyce Scholarship,” says Jenelle McCalla, a second-year law student. “Although my legal education thus far has been rewarding, at times it can be challenging, both academically and financially. This scholarship will assist me in financing my studies, allowing me to focus my efforts on fulfilling my legal aspirations.”
