MEDIA ADVISORY: The University of Ottawa remembers
OTTAWA, November 8, 2012 — A Remembrance Day ceremony will take place on November 9 at the University of Ottawa to honour the men and women who have served Canada during times of war, conflict and peace.
Young veteran Nicolas Fleet will speak during the ceremony. He devoted five years of his life to serving the Royal Canadian Navy as a naval electronics technician before heading down a new career path and pursuing a degree at uOttawa.

“My work took me to a number of countries, and I saw so many inequalities between those countries and even between citizens of the same country,” says Fleet. “I wanted to learn what causes these differences, so I went into economics, international trade and globalization.”
Professor Irena R. Makaryk, departments of English and Theatre, co-editor (with doctoral candidate Marissa McHugh) of Shakespeare and the Second World War: Memory, Culture, Identity, will also attend the event. The book, published last week, was inspired by the life of her late mother, whose homeland, Ukraine, came under attack from all sides during the Second World War.
This is the first book to examine the role of Shakespeare during the Second World War. It demonstrates the wide variety of ways in which Shakespeare was recycled, reviewed and reinterpreted by the various belligerents from 1939–1945, and reveals how we can understand Shakespeare through the war, and the war through Shakespeare.
